Kybella®

Injectable Fat Reduction at the South Shore's South Coast Dermatology

The fat that makes up a double chin can be difficult to reduce. Even strict lifestyle changes, such as a carefully planned diet or regular exercise, might not make a difference. This is because large submental fat cells might not necessarily shrink, even if weight-loss efforts lead to visible contour improvements elsewhere on the body. For these cases, there is Kybella® at the South Shore's South Coast Dermatology.

Kybella® is an entirely nonsurgical cosmetic dermatology treatment, injected directly into the unwanted fat cells to disrupt them and reduce volume in the targeted area. In addition to addressing a double chin, it can also be used to lessen the appearance of jowls that keep a jawline from looking clean and defined.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Kybella®?

Kybella® injections have deoxycholic acid as their active ingredient. When carefully injected into areas with numerous fat cells, this deoxycholic acid causes the fat cells to die in a process known as cytolysis, which causes them to burst. Natural maintenance processes at work in the body then remove the cells damaged by the treatment, gradually clearing away the fat—which leads to a reduction in volume.

How Long Will a Kybella® Treatment Take?

A single Kybella® injection session can be a short as 15 to 20 minutes, with no need to plan for downtime afterward. Patients can resume their daily activities as soon as they leave from their appointment at South Coast Dermatology.

Who is a good candidate for Kybella®?

Kybella® injections are ideal for adults who have an unwanted pocket of submental fat—also known as "stubborn" fat—that does not seem to be impacted by lifestyle changes. In general, it is especially effective on patients whose skin is elastic enough to conform to the slimmer contours after the fat cells are damaged and cleared away. Patients concerned with skin laxity may consider Ultherapy® or other tightening treatments.

When will results be visible?

It takes time for the body to remove ruptured cells from the treatment area, so patients can expect results to begin to appear in the weeks after a treatment session, then to improve over the following months.

While one session is sufficient to make a visible difference in the submental area, achieving ideal results may require two to four sessions, each spaced roughly one month apart.

There will be some swelling afterward, which can last about a week and generally means better results.

Are there other nonsurgical options for reducing a double chin?

CoolSculpting® is another nonsurgical fat-reduction treatment available at South Coast Dermatology, using the power of cold to trigger fat cell death in the submental and other areas on the body. Talk to the team to determine which strategy would best suit your unique contouring needs.
