Collagen Loss and Dermal Fillers
Juvederm®, Restylane®, and More in Weymouth, MA
Smooth, youthful skin has plenty of collagen, which serves to give it its structure and provide a framework for moisture. Unfortunately, there is a reason this protein is associated with youth. As we age, collagen breaks down more quickly and is replaced less regularly, so it gradually diminishes, leading to the development of wrinkles, harsh angles on the face, and other signs of aging.
At South Coast Dermatology in Weymouth, we use dermal fillers to address the cosmetic problems associated with collagen loss. There are more than half a dozen options available, allowing us to tailor each treatment to the individual.

Before your treatment, no matter the specific dermal filler used, you will generally sit with a topical anesthetic on your skin to make the procedure more comfortable. Then the skin is cleansed. Many fillers contain a small amount of lidocaine to minimize discomfort. Injection sessions typically take 15 to 30 minutes, with variations depending on the filler used and areas to be treated.
Depending on how fast your body breaks down the filler and where it is injected, results that address collagen loss and other signs of aging can last from months to years.
Most patients experience minimal side effects. Some have swelling, which typically resolves in one to two days. Some patients will have bruising. The chance of bruising can be minimized by avoiding blood thinners (aspirin, NSAIDS, vitamin E, fish oil, garlic supplements, and alcohol) for one week prior to treatment. Some patients benefit from eating fresh pineapple the day before treatment due to the Bromelain enzyme in the fruit, which has been reported to minimize swelling and bruising.
Juvederm® is an FDA-approved hyaluronic acid dermal filler. Once injected, it supports the skin's surface, leading to a firmer, smoother, more youthful face. It is particularly effective for nasolabial creases (AKA "smile lines") and marionette lines (creases that appear at the corners of the mouth that result in a sad expression). It can also minimize the appearance of scars and enhance your lips.
Since Juvederm® stimulates new collagen formation to some extent, regular treatments make it possible that in time you will need it less often.

Voluma® is a hyaluronic acid filler in the Juvederm® family. Because it is thicker than other fillers, in can correct volume loss in areas that have lost the structural support of collagen, fat, and bone during the aging process. It is particularly effective for adding volume and restoring contour to the cheeks and temples. When injected in these areas, it can also lift the sagging skin of the jowls, creating a more contoured jawline. It lasts up to two years, which is nearly twice as long as other fillers.
Like Juvederm®, Voluma® stimulates new collagen formation, so regular treatments can ultimately result in a need for less filler in future injections.
Also in the Juvederm® family, this filler for plumping lips that were once round with collagen and smoothing lines around the mouth (perioral rhytides) was designed specifically as a smooth gel. It gives a soft, natural feel, with results that last up to one year.
This Juvederm® filler is another option for people looking to treat nasolabial creases, but its formula makes it especially long lasting. The smoothing effects can last up to 18 months, with specific results varying from person to person.
The Brilliant Distinctions® program offers rewards for patients who choose Allergan products for their cosmetic needs. In addition to collagen-replacing dermal fillers, Allergan makes BOTOX®, Kybella®, and other cosmetic treatments and devices.
Restylane® is one of the oldest and most widely used hyaluronic acid fillers. It is exceptionally effective for treating nasolabial folds and marionette lines that appear as collagen diminishes. It can also be used under the eyes to correct a sunken look, and to minimize scars. One quick treatment with no downtime can yield dramatic results. Restylane® and Juvederm® are similar, but there are subtle differences our physicians can discuss with you.
Restylane® may stimulate the production of fresh collagen, which can ultimately result in less of the product required for the same results.

Restylane® Lyft (formerally Perlane) is another thick hyaluronic acid filler designed to lift and contour cheeks and treat deep facial folds, with results that can last six months to a year.
The mouth and lips are another area where collagen loss readily reveals signs of aging. As we grow older, our lips thin and lose their shape, while vertical lines appear above the mouth. Restylane® Silk is a smoother filler designed to precisely shape lips and fill lines around the mouth, resulting in silkier and natural looking lips for about six months.
Sculptra® is a cosmetic treatment that provides long-term volume restoration for areas on the face that are losing collagen and changing with the aging process. A series of two to four sessions at four- to six-week intervals promotes new collagen formation to fill the hollows under the eyes and through the cheeks and temples for long-lasting results.
South Coast Dermatology participates in the ASPIRE Galderma Rewards program, which gives you ways to earn exclusive rewards, bonuses, and discounts by choosing Dysport®, Restylane®, Restylane® Silk, and Sculptra®.
A dermal filler "as unique as you are," Belotero® was designed to integrate into your skin and mold to your distinct facial contours. By adapting to the uniqueness of your skin, this filler softens lines and wrinkles around the nose and mouth for smooth and natural results.
Can You Combine Dermal Fillers?
Yes! Our physicians can use a combination of fillers to deliver the results you are seeking, as well as pair them with neuromodulators (BOTOX® and Dysport®). They can also work well with a variety of collagen-stimulating and skin-tightening options, including laser treatments and skin care products to achieve a complete plan for facial rejuvenation based on your cosmetic goals.
