Laser Tattoo Removal
As you enter a new stage in life, you may wish to remove an old tattoo. At South Coast Dermatology we can safely remove tattoos of most colors with our highly innovative Q-switched Ruby Laser.
Our Q-switched Ruby Laser delivers the high and safe energy required to effectively remove tattoos of all ink types and depths including difficult to treat ink colors such as sky-blue and lime green without damaging surrounding tissue.
How does it work?
The Q-switched technology works by delivering an extremely short and bright beam of light that breaks up the tattoo pigment or ink particles. As the area heals, the body metabolizes the shattered pigment revealing clear skin with minimal risk of scarring.
The 694 nm Ruby Wavelength is selectively absorbed by tattoo pigment in the skin without being absorbed by other molecules in the surrounding tissue. This enhances its safety and reduces side effects. The shorter the pulse, the more effective the laser. Hence, the pulses of only 20nsec produce high peak power for better results with minimal pain.
What Should I Expect During Laser Tattoo Removal?
The laser tattoo removal procedure feels like a strong rubber band snapping against the skin. Most patients appreciate having a topical or local anesthetic applied prior to the procedure.
How many treatments are required?
Most tattoos can be removed in approximately 6 treatments spaced 3-4 weeks apart.
Are the results permanent?
Yes, after the tattoo is removed it will not return and touch ups are unnecessary
What should I do after the procedure?
You will receive post-care instructions. Pain is usually minimal. Usually there will be crusting, blistering, or mild itching over the tattoo. This usually resolves in one-two weeks. We recommend washing gently and applying Vaseline or Aquaphor to speed healing. You may apply ice and take NSAIDS or Actaminophen to alleviate any discomfort.
