Learn more about the different laser therapies and how they can improve your skin.
Are you dealing with hyperpigmentation, acne scars and other issues that keep you from having beautiful, healthy-looking skin? If so, you’ve certainly come to the right place. Our South Shore, MA, dermatologists offer a wide range of laser therapies to help treat a multitude of skin issues to give you the skin you deserve.
Here are some of the most popular laser skin therapies our South Shore, MA, skin doctors have to offer:
The ruby laser gets its name because it emits a red-colored wavelength, which is great for targeting and eliminating everything from pigmentation (e.g. birthmarks; melasma; freckles) to unwanted hair and tattoos. The ruby laser is attracted to certain colors, so often times your dermatologist may recommend the ruby laser if you want to remove a black, blue or green tattoo.
Before the treatment, a topical numbing cream will be applied to the area so you don’t feel any discomfort. Depending on the type of issue you are treating and the severity, you may require multiple laser sessions to get the results you want.
Pulsed Light Therapy/Photofacials
Intense pulsed light (IPL) therapy, sometimes referred to as a photofacial, uses a special light to reduce the appearance of several common skin issues to provide smoother, even skin tone and texture. IPL therapy is great for:
- Improving the skin’s texture
- Reducing redness (e.g. rosacea)
- Reducing and eliminating age spots, freckles and pigmentation
- Reducing the appearance of superficial scars (e.g. acne scars)
- Removing unwanted hair
This treatment is non-invasive and doesn’t involve any downtime. Just like with most laser treatments, you may require more than one session to see the desired results.
Sometimes nicknamed the “lunchtime procedure” because it can be performed quickly, painlessly and with no downtime, ClearLife is a fractional laser that is able to handle both deep and superficial skin problems. It’s great for all skin types and can be used to:
- Reduce or eliminate hyperpigmentation
- Reduce sun damage
- Reduce the appearance of lines and wrinkles
- Even out skin tone and texture
- Reduce the appearance of stretch marks
Blue Light Therapy
This unique type of phototherapy is often used to treat acne or actinic keratosis (precancerous lesions that show up as thick, scaly patches of skin). Blue light therapy treats acne by killing the acne-causing bacteria on the surface of the skin, making it less likely for pimples to form. When directed over actinic keratosis, the laser is able to destroy the precancerous cells.

What is ruby laser?
This high-intensity non-invasive laser offers either short or long pulses of energy that can be reflected, transmitted or absorbed by the skin, depending on the purpose of the procedure. This laser treatment is versatile, allowing our South Shore, MA, skin doctors to safely and effectively treat a variety of issues to improve your appearance.
What can the ruby laser be used for?
Since we can tailor the wavelength of the ruby laser to meet your needs, this means that we can remove certain tattoos and unwanted hair while also reducing and even eliminating hyperpigmentations such as birthmarks, sun damage and melasma.
What goes into the ruby laser treatment?
During your consultation, we will sit down with you to discuss your treatment goals to make sure that the ruby laser is the right approach. We will also perform a thorough skin evaluation to make sure that pigmentations that you want to treat aren’t cancerous.
During the ruby laser treatment, we will provide you with eye protection, which you will wear throughout the course of your treatment. The handheld laser will then be directed over the surface of the skin. While the procedure isn’t painful it can be a little uncomfortable. If you are sensitive, anxious or have to treat a larger area, talk to us about first using a topical anesthesia to numb the area prior to treatment.
In most cases, patients will require multiple sessions in order to get optimal results. Those with larger tattoos, thicker or more widespread and unwanted hair, as well as those with darker or more disperse pigmentations will require several treatments spaced a few weeks apart.
Once the treatment is complete, ice will be placed over the area to soothe it and reduce any redness or swelling. It’s common for there to be some irritation and redness for the first couple of days after treatment.
